Long Distance Relationships

Long distance relationships don't need to be a death sentence. You can start healthy long distance relationships if you'd like to.

Long Distance Relationships: Are You In One?

There is much debate on whether long distance relationships really do work. Most people have tried long distance relationships and some do make it while others peter out and become pointless and thus end. We don't choose who we fall for and even if our prospective partner lives close by initially, there may be circumstances that take them or us to another place. So even if we do not wish to participate in a long distance relationship, we are sometimes unintentionally thrust into one.

Do long relationships work?

Relationships are difficult at the best of times but when we are dating someone who lives miles away we are presented with a whole new set of challenges to deal with. From my own experience it is tough to have a serious, committed relationship with someone who lives far away. Seeing your loved one once a month at the beginning stage of a relationship is tough to deal with. When we start dating someone we are 'into' we often cannot get enough of them so to be subjected to long periods of time apart doesn't seem fair!

Jealousy and trust are two major players when your loved one is away from your watchful eye. If jealousy rears it's ugly head, it be damaging and painful for both parties. If you and your partner have opted for an 'open' relationship and neither one of you is jealous this could help you stay together. One thing that is for sure, the distance will test your feelings for one another.

rom the evidence I've gathered it seems that established relationships have a better survival rate than new relationships in the long distance relationships stakes. If you have an established relationship you are more aware of whether this person really is worth staying celibate for, weeks at a time! You have established feelings and guidelines and probably have well (or badly!) placed trust in that person.

In short: long distance relationships can work - but not forever!

There is only so long you can be living away from your partner for. I think temporary long distance relationships do work because you know it's only a matter of time before you are reunited. If long distance relationships drag on for many months and even years it gets to a point where you really feel single and thus start behaving in that way, we are all human after all and we do have needs of varying degrees.

There are types of people that are more suited to it than others. Emotionally strong and independent types may deal with the challenges imposed by long distance relationships better than needy, insecure types of people. As with all relationships, some make it and others don't! So stock up on long distance relationship advice and get the preparation you need to succeed.
